Welcome to Oak and Elm, our Year 5 classes. Year 5 is an exciting stage of Key Stage 2, where children continue to develop their independence, resilience and confidence as they progress towards their final years of primary school.

We provide a supportive, engaging and challenging learning environment, where children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, develop their own ideas and approach new challenges with confidence.

During Year 5, our children develop key skills across the curriculum, including:

• Reading & Writing – developing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing for a range of purposes, while strengthening grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Maths – developing secure knowledge of number, fractions, decimals, percentages, calculation, measurement, geometry and problem-solving.
• Science – asking questions, investigating and developing a deeper understanding of the world through practical and scientific enquiry.
• History & Geography – exploring significant periods and civilisations from the past, while developing geographical knowledge and understanding of different places and cultures.
• Computing – developing digital skills and learning how to use technology safely, responsibly and creatively.
• Art, Design & Music – developing creativity, exploring a range of techniques and materials, and expressing ideas through different artistic and musical experiences.
• PE & Physical Development – developing fitness, coordination, teamwork and resilience while understanding the importance of keeping our bodies healthy.
• PSHE & Personal Development – developing independence, self-confidence, positive relationships, emotional wellbeing and an understanding of how to make healthy choices.

Our exciting topics include Earth and Space, Ancient Greece, The Victorians and South America, giving children opportunities to explore fascinating ideas, develop their knowledge and make connections across different areas of the curriculum.

Throughout the year, we provide exciting experiences, trips and activities to enhance learning and bring our topics to life. These memorable opportunities help children apply their knowledge, develop new skills and create lasting experiences.
