Cherry & Apple

Welcome to Cherry and Apple, our Year 2 classes. Year 2 is an exciting and important year as children continue to build their independence, resilience and confidence while preparing for the next stage of their learning journey into Key Stage 2.

We provide a positive, supportive and engaging learning environment, where children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, persevere when faced with challenges and develop the skills they need to become confident, independent learners.

During Year 2, our children develop key skills across the curriculum, including:

• Reading & Phonics – developing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and a love of reading.
• Writing – developing spelling, grammar, punctuation, handwriting and the ability to write for different purposes.
• Maths – developing number fluency, calculation, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement, shape and problem-solving.
• Science – asking questions, carrying out investigations and developing knowledge of living things, materials, plants and the world around us.
• History & Geography – exploring significant events and people from the past, while developing geographical knowledge of places, oceans and continents.
• Computing – developing digital skills and learning how to use technology safely and responsibly.
• Art, Design & Music – developing creativity, exploring different techniques and materials, and expressing ideas through the arts.
• PE & Forest School – developing physical skills, teamwork, resilience and an understanding of how to keep our minds and bodies healthy.
• Personal Development – building confidence, independence, resilience, positive relationships and responsibility.

Our exciting topics include The Great Fire of London, Oceans & Continents and The Victorians, giving children opportunities to explore, investigate and make connections across their learning.

At Heaton Park Primary, we encourage our Year 2 children to be independent, resilient and proud of their achievements. As they prepare to move into Key Stage 2, we support every child to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to continue to flourish.
