Cherry & Apple

Welcome to Cherry and Apple, our Year 1 classes. Year 1 marks an exciting step into Key Stage 1, where children build on their Early Years experiences and develop the knowledge, skills and independence they need for the next stage of their learning journey.

We provide a hands-on, engaging and supportive learning environment, where children are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, work collaboratively and become increasingly independent learners.

During Year 1, our children develop key skills across the curriculum, including:

• Reading & Phonics – applying their phonics knowledge to read unfamiliar words, developing fluency and understanding stories and information texts.
• Writing – developing sentence structure, spelling, handwriting and punctuation while writing for different purposes.
• Maths – building secure number knowledge, developing calculation strategies, exploring shape, measure and place value, and solving problems.
• Science – observing, questioning, investigating and developing an understanding of plants, animals, materials and the world around them.
• History & Geography – developing an understanding of the past, exploring significant people and events, and learning about places and environments.
• Computing – developing digital skills and learning how technology can be used safely and creatively.
• Art, Design & Music – developing creativity, exploring different materials and techniques, and expressing ideas through the arts.
• PE & Forest School – developing physical skills, coordination, teamwork, resilience and confidence through active and outdoor learning.
• Personal Development – developing friendships, self-confidence, independence, responsibility and the ability to work positively with others.

Our exciting topics include Marvellous Me, Hot and Cold, Wonderful Weather, Our Green World and Castles, giving children opportunities to explore, investigate and make connections across their learning.

We also prepare for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, developing children’s confidence in recognising and blending sounds so they can read words accurately and independently.

At Heaton Park Primary, we encourage our children to be curious, have a go, persevere and be proud of their achievements. Through positive praise and a safe, nurturing and happy environment, we help every child to flourish and develop a strong foundation for their journey through Key Stage 1.
