Seedlings & Saplings
Welcome to Seedlings and Saplings, our Reception classes. Reception is an exciting year where children build on their experiences from nursery, develop their independence and become confident, enthusiastic learners.
Through a combination of play, exploration and carefully planned learning experiences, our children develop key skills across all areas of the Early Years curriculum, including:
- Communication & Language – listening carefully, developing vocabulary, speaking confidently and expressing ideas.
- Early Literacy – enjoying stories and rhymes, developing phonological awareness, learning letter sounds and beginning to read and write.
- Early Maths – counting, recognising numbers, exploring quantities, patterns, shapes, measures and solving simple problems.
- Physical Development – developing coordination, balance, gross and fine-motor skills, as well as learning to look after their bodies.
- Personal, Social & Emotional Development – building positive relationships, managing emotions, developing resilience and becoming increasingly independent.
- Understanding the World – exploring nature, people, communities and the world around us, developing curiosity and asking questions.
- Expressive Arts & Design – using imagination and creativity through art, music, dance, role play, construction and imaginative play.
At Heaton Park Primary, our Seedlings and Saplings are encouraged to be curious, have a go, learn from mistakes and celebrate their achievements. We work together to give every child the confidence, skills and love of learning they need to thrive as they continue their journey through school.
