Oak & Elm

Welcome to Oak and Elm, our Year 3 classes. Year 3 is an exciting milestone as children make the transition into Key Stage 2, building their independence, confidence and resilience as learners.

We provide a supportive, engaging and challenging learning environment, where children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, ask questions, solve problems and develop the skills they need to thrive throughout Key Stage 2.

During Year 3, our children develop key skills across the curriculum, including:

• Reading & Writing – developing reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills, with a growing focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Maths – developing number fluency, multiplication and division, fractions, calculation strategies, measurement, shape and problem-solving.
• Science – investigating, observing and developing an understanding of animals, plants, forces, materials and the world around us.
• History & Geography – exploring fascinating periods of history and developing geographical knowledge and understanding of the wider world.
• Computing – developing digital skills and learning to use technology safely, responsibly and creatively.
• Art, Design & Music – developing creativity, exploring different techniques and materials, and expressing ideas through a range of artistic and musical experiences.
• PE & Physical Development – developing fitness, coordination, teamwork and resilience while learning how to maintain healthy minds and bodies.
• PSHE & Personal Development – developing independence, confidence, positive relationships, emotional wellbeing and an understanding of how to make healthy choices.

Our exciting topics include Prehistoric Britain, Ancient Egypt and the Romans, providing children with opportunities to explore the past, investigate new ideas and develop their understanding through engaging experiences.

Throughout the year, we enjoy exciting trips and visitors linked to our topics, helping to bring learning to life and give children memorable experiences that support and reinforce their knowledge.

At Heaton Park Primary, we encourage our Year 3 children to be curious, independent and resilient learners. As they settle into Key Stage 2, we support them to embrace new challenges, celebrate their achievements and develop a lifelong love of learning.
